On Monday, December 24, 2018, George Edward Finley passed away at home in the loving care of his two daughters at the age of 87.
George was born on July 20, 1931 to the late John and Ola Finley in Sardis, Mississippi where he lived until moving with his mother and aunt to Cleveland, Ohio at the age of 10. George spent his high school years at East Technical High School. He briefly worked for the City of Cleveland before joining the Cleveland Stevedore Company as a Longshoreman where he worked for over 30 years before an industrial accident in 1988 when he retired. Even after his accident, he never allowed his disability to defeat him. He continued to drive and live independently for over 25 years.
He believed in the power of education and encouraged the pursuit of education to all young people he knew. This was especially true with his daughters. Throughout their lives, he supported their goals and needs to the very best of his ability. He was an avid reader and kept abreast of current issues, even writing letters to several U.S Presidents to express his concerns. He loved baseball and loved to travel, visiting much of the United States and his relatives.
He is survived by his two daughters Sherry and Doris White, two grandchildren William Scott and Brianna White, great-granddaughter Khaliah Wadley-White, his sister Patricia Finley and nephew Rayshawn Finley. George was preceded in death by his wife Ida (nee Johnson), his parents John and Ola, brother Bob Young and sister Jessie Hawkins, his great-grandmother Lula Draper, grandmother Texanna Henderson, Aunt-Goldie Morris, nephew Therryl Finley, and granddaughter Bianca White.
Sherry and Doris would like to express their appreciation for all the support they received throughout their efforts to care for their father from their Mother, Helen, their siblings, Charlotte, Joe, James and Leonard, their niece Tracy, and their cousins Elaine and Brandy.
George was a kind man, a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. He will truly be missed.
