Dr Thomas G Pretlow II, the oldest son of the late Dr William Ribble Pretlow and May Fletcher Pretlow, Warrenton, VA, died on Friday, February 23, 2024, at Judson Park. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Theresa Pace Pretlow, Rochester, NY; sons, James M (Michelle) Elmhurst, IL, Joseph P. (Kathryn) Beverly Hills, CA, and David M, Brentwood, TN; grandchildren Mieko P, San Diego, CA, Alexa G and Dean, Beverly Hills, CA; brothers C Tiffany (Mary) High Point, NC, J Denson (Dianna) Hillsboro, OR, Haydon G (predeceased), and sister, Audrey P Mitchell (Steven) Walkerton, VA. Tom has a BA from Oberlin, MD from the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, residency at Univ of Wisconsin, Madison, and research at NIH while in the Public Health Service. He joined the faculty of Rutgers Medical School, followed by 13 years at the Univ of Alabama in Birmingham before joining the Medical School faculty at Case Western Reserve University.
Tom was an avid outdoor person, except in winter when he fled to FL for his 25-mile bike rides. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes that he started from seed. He was a strong supporter of Scouting as a parent (all 3 boys are Eagle Scouts), a Scout Executive Board member, and a Scoutmaster of an inner-city troop. He was honored with the Vulcan Award in Birmingham and the Silver Beaver Award in Cleveland.
